Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplant Educational Class
This class prepares patients and caregivers for an allogenic transplant. The class reviews valuable information about what to expect. A tour of the Transplant Unit is included. Your nurse will register you for the class and let you know the date, time and location. This progam is for Bone Marrow Transplant patients only.

Brain Tumor Support Group: The Abramson Cancer Center of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Division of Neuro-Oncology: Brain Tumor support group for brain tumor patients and their families. The group provides an opportunity for support, sharing, and education.

This group meets 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Neurosurgery Conference Room, 3rd Floor Silverstein Pavilion. Interested patients should call Arbena Merolli, MSW, at 215-615-5240 to obtain further information.

Breast Cancer Support Group for Women newly-diagnosed with Breast Cancer
Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center offers a brand new support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Meetings are held on the third Friday of the month except July and August, starting April 19, 2012. Meetings are held 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, 1st Floor West Pavilion, Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Head and Neck Cancer Support Group: The Abramson Cancer Center offers patients and loved ones the opportunity to gain support and information from others with similar experiences and concerns. This group meets the first Wednesday of every moth from 9:45AM - 11:15AM, except July and August.

Prostate Cancer Support Group: This group offers the latest information about prostate cancer and treatment, and an opportunity to meet with other survivors. This group provides emotional support and strategies for coping. AR-SA>This group meets the third Tuesday of every month from 9:45AM - 11:15AM, except August and December, in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, 1st Floor West Pavilion, Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.

Look Good...Feel Better Workshop: A free program of the American Cancer Society that teaches beauty techniques to women who are actively undergoing cancer treatment to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. Classes are taught by licensed cosmetologists who have been specially trained and each woman practices techniques using products donated by the cosmetics industry.

Nutrition Classes

Build a Healthy Diet Workshop: This interactive workshop, led by dietitians from the Radiation Oncology and the Abramson Cancer Center, will provide individualized diet planning and information on creating a healthy diet. It is open to all members of the cancer center community including staff, current patients and survivors.Space is limited and reservations are required for this free workshop.

Nutrition from A to Z: Answers to your nutrition and diet questions: Are you confused by all the information on cancer and nutrition; what to eat and what to avoid? During this one hour class, taught by a Registered Dietitian from the Abramson Cancer Center, your questions will be answered by a nutritoin expert. The program reviews the current nutritional guidelines for cancer survivors.

Topics covered include:

  • What are your calorie and protein requirements?
  • What are phytochemicals?
  • Does sugar feed cancer?
  • Do you need supplements?

Nutrition and Diet for Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer has its own specific diet and nutrition issues. The side effects of cancer treatment can affect your ability to eat and maintain your nutritional status during treatment. In addition there are questions about what foods to eat and how to maintain a healthy weight to reduce the risk of recurrence. This one-hour class covers many of these issues and addresses the following topics:

  • How to get the nutrition you need during and after treatment
  • Handling side effects that interfere with eating
  • Benefit of maintaining a healthy weight
  • Food to include or avoid
  • Answers to your nutrition questions

Nutrition and Diet for Breast Cancer is held every other month from 2:30 to 4:00PM in the Patient and Family Services Conference Room, First Floor, West Pavilion, in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.
