Shared Resources

Clinical Research Unit

Director: David Vaughn, M.D.

The CRU is an essential core resource that supports therapeutic clinical trials conducted by ACC investigators.

The specific objective of the core is to provide the necessary infrastructure to support adult therapeutic clinical trial research in the ACC. The CRU provides a full spectrum of services including protocol development, budget and financial analysis, regulatory affairs expertise, research nursing, and data management. As a centralized administrative unit, the CRU provides highly skilled research personnel to support the ACC clinical researchers who would not otherwise have the resources necessary to properly conduct clinical trials.

Locations

The CRU is primarily located on floors 12 and 16 of Penn Tower adjacent to Abramson Cancer Center Administrative offices and close to the outpatient oncology practices of the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine (PCAM). The CRU has additional office space on floors 2 and 4 of PCAM. Dedicated storage space, specimen freezers and sample processing laboratory is located on floors 7 and 12 of Penn Tower.

Fees

There are no user fees for core services. Funding for data managers and oncology research nurses is recovered from industry-sponsored trials, cooperative groups (i.e., NSABP, EGOG), institutional funds, externally funded grants, and philanthropy.

Equipment

Freezers/Centrifuges

CRU staff utilizes three freezers for storing biospecimens prior to shipment as required by protocol. These include a Harris Custom Deluxe Ultra Low Freezer (-85°C), a Valplus (-86°C) and a SO-LOW Ultra Low Freezer (-85°C). CRU staff utilizes four centrifuges including two Eppendorf refrigerated centrifuges (5702R), a Thermo Scientific Sorvall Legend XTR centrifuge and an IEC Centra GP8R centrifuge. The CRU utilizes Velos eResearch as the Clinical Trials Management System and allows for administrative tracking during the protocol approval process, protocol and subject registration, data management through the building and use of CFRs and patient calendaring.
